Interested in Starting a Bike Bus?

If you've been following along, you know that the bike bus rides in South Pasadena are very popular. By the end of the last school year, we had 173 riders over five routes to two schools. To our knowledge, this makes it the largest bike bus group in Southern California.

The bike bus rides have also changed the conversation in our city about what our streets are for. When people see joyful young riders and rollers going to school in the morning, they understand that streets are a valuable public space that needs to be made safe and useful for people of all ages and abilities. That's having a real impact in South Pasadena, which has already started implementing safety and access improvements.

We often hear from friends in neighboring cities that they wish they could organize a bike bus, but don't know where to start. It can seem overwhelming, but the steps we took in South Pasadena can be replicated elsewhere.

That's why we are announcing our SGV Bike Bus project. We are inviting anyone who lives in Pasadena, Alhambra, San Marino, or NELA and is part of an elementary school community to contact us for free help building your own bike bus program. We can provide:

• connections to practiced bike bus leaders,

• advice on software for mapping routes and communicating with riders,

• experience working with PTA and city groups,

• ideas for special events, like bike rodeos or partner rides.

We're doing this because we know that more people riding to school means that our streets are safer, healthier, and happier.
