Hello South Pas Active friends,
This December, we're celebrating a successful fundraiser, news from our bike to school initiatives, and asking for your support on a critical school safety campaign. We're also announcing a festive community ride to Altadena. Read on for ways to take action and get involved!
We're launching a signature drive asking the South Pasadena Unified School District to request that the City Council establish safe speed limits around our schools.
Take action now: Sign our petition and share with caregivers, students, and anyone who care about our children's safety!
South Pasadena is one of the few cities in the region that has no school zones with reduced speed limits. This gap in traffic safety protections puts our most vulnerable residents at risk. Many cities throughout California are now using their new authority to reduce speed limits to 20 mph or lower near schools and parks. These evidence-based measures have proven to reduce serious injuries and save lives.
This fall, we've been proud to support our local schools through multiple initiatives. We raised over $2,000 from our bike valet at Corazón del Valle, an Active Street event in El Monte. The funds will go directly to the bike and walk bus program at Arroyo Vista Elementary.
We also supported Pedalpalooza, the exciting "bike rodeo" event organized by the Arroyo Vista Elementary PTA on October 25th. The event brought hundreds of families together for free bike tune-ups, riding skills courses, and raffle prizes. Thank you to the AV PTA and volunteers who made this a fun day for skill development that helps our children live healthier, more active, and more independent lives. See the video embedded below for a recap of the event.
Finally, October's Bike to School Day was a tremendous success! Check out the excellent coverage in the South Pasadena Review, which highlights how the bike bus program is redefining the school commute and thanks to the South Pasadena Police Department for their support.
South Pas Active joined Streets Are For Everyone in remembering those we've lost to traffic violence. On November 16th, we joined the Day of Remembrance to honor victims and survivors, and to advocate for the safer streets that could prevent these tragedies.
The city of South Pasadena sees a traffic fatality roughly every year, a rate that is comparable to the city of Los Angeles. For every death, there are many more injuries and people who live in fear of the roads. These street fatalities are preventable. Through traffic calming measures, speed limit reductions, improved infrastructure, and community commitment to safe streets, we can protect the lives of our most vulnerable road users.
Join us for a festive feeder ride on Saturday, December 6th at 3:45 PM from the South Pasadena Metro Station to the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition's Holiday Lights Ride on Christmas Tree Lane. This is a great way to support our neighbors in Altadena as they host this special holiday tradition. RSVP welcome (esp if you have special needs) by emailing info@southpasactive.org or just join on the day. Learn more about the full ride and be sure to bring your (holiday) bike lights for the night ride home!
Did you know that choosing car-free living has the biggest climate impact of any personal lifestyle choice? According to the World Resources Institute, eliminating or significantly reducing car use has a larger environmental benefit than any other individual decision. Learn more about why supporting bike and pedestrian infrastructure in South Pasadena is so important for our climate.
Want to volunteer with South Pas Active? We're always looking for committed community members to help with advocacy, events, and outreach. Visit our website or email us at info@southpasactive.org to learn about upcoming volunteer opportunities.
Stay Active,
Your friends at South Pas Active
In November, we worked to raise funds and supported the Arroyo Vista PTA in organizing Pedalpalooza.
We supported SAFE in honoring the Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. The event was held at the Caltrans building in DTLA and included 711 roses on empty chairs to represent those lost to traffic violence in LA county.
We had a blast at Pedalpalooza at Arroyo Vista Elementary!
