Hello friends of South Pas Active!
We kicked off July by participating in the annual 4th of July Parade with a 60-person bike bus. Thank you to everyone who rode, scooted, walked, carried signs, and cheered us on. It was an important moment for our organization’s visibility and a joyful reminder of why we do this work: to make safer, more accessible streets for people of all ages.
One of South Pas Active’s core programs has been the Bike Bus, which has now been passed on to local PTAs. We were thrilled to see the Bike Bus featured in the South Pas Review, highlighting this growing movement in our city. While it may look like “just kids biking to school,” it is changing how families move around South Pasadena and we’re excited to support that movement every step of the way.
Speaking of safer streets, City Council will continue its discussion of the proposed street improvement bond measure on July 7.
Action Needed: July 7 City Council Meeting
This Tuesday, July 7, City Council will hold a special meeting to consider the proposed $80 million street improvement bond measure for the November ballot.
Our roads, sidewalks, and infrastructure need repair. South Pas Active supports investing in our streets. But if the City is going to ask voters to approve a major investment in our streets, we believe the measure should clearly reflect the needs of all street users, including people walking, biking, rolling, and using mobility devices.
Repaving is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to do things right.
We are asking City Council to strengthen the bond measure by including a clear commitment that a portion of bond funds will be dedicated to safety, accessibility, and active transportation improvements wherever possible.
This could include:
explicit language that the any overlapping repaving projects with City’s mobility plan and 2011 Bicycle Master Plan will be implemented using Bond Funds.
Installing raised crosswalks and other traffic calming toolkit measures, especially around schools
Repairing sidewalks and upgrading ADA accessibility
Ensuring daylighting protocols are followed at intersections and crossings
Building protected bikeways and bike paths
Other cities have passed street-funding measures that name safety, accessibility, sidewalks, and active transportation more clearly. Berkeley’s Measure FF, for example, dedicates a significant portion of street funding to safety improvements, sidewalks, bike and pedestrian projects, and Complete Streets implementation. (By the way - a South Pas High graduate was integral to the passing of Measure FF!)
The way we are moving around the city is changing - this bond project should reflect that.

Dear Mayor and Councilmembers,
I support investing in South Pasadena’s streets, but I urge the City Council to strengthen the proposed street improvement bond measure by including a clear commitment to safety, accessibility, and active transportation.
If we are repaving and repairing streets, we should do it right. Bond-funded projects should incorporate Complete Streets principles wherever possible and should include improvements such as safer crosswalks, sidewalk repairs, ADA upgrades, traffic calming, protected bikeways, and safer routes to schools.
This bond is an important opportunity to make our streets safer and more accessible for everyone — not just drivers, but also children, seniors, pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and people with disabilities.
Please dedicate a portion of the bond funding to pedestrian, bicycle, and accessibility improvements, and ensure that street repaving projects are designed for people of all ages and abilities.
Thank you,
